Meet John Gotimer

John Gotimer is a television producer/editor with a passion for writing. He also enjoys observing the myriad of things that fly over his backyard. John lives on Long Island with his wife and three children.

What does Raison D'Etre mean?

It means, the most important reason or purpose for someone or something's existence.

What inspired you to write a book?

I began this novel on New Years' Day after witnessing a balloon from the night before floating over my house. I began wondering what that balloon had seen and what a story it could tell. I mentioned this to my wife and she suggested I write a book. Later that night, the book was born. It is dedicated to all those searching for their own reason for being.

What genre is your book?

Fantasy

Did you try traditional publishing before you self-published?

I did not try to have the book published. Strictly self-published.

Why did you decide to self-publish?

As a full-time producer, I felt that I did not have time to pursue publishing. Also, fear of criticism and rejection. :)

Did you get your book proofed and/or critiqued before you self-published?

I had asked a few friends, all avid readers, to proof and critique.

Did you seek out Beta readers?

No Beta readers.

Did you hire a company to help you with self-publishing and if so, did you shop different companies before settling on the one you chose?

I chose Lulu. They have been terrific.

Was it difficult to navigate the self-publishing world?

Not difficult at all. Formatting was time-consuming, however.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Just write. Keep writing. And don't underestimate your own imagination.

Is there a sequel to your book or do you plan on self-publishing a different book?

No sequel planned but I am in the process of writing something very different.

To purchase John's book:

All proceeds of Raison D'Etre: The Balloon go to Parkinson's research.

I co-founded and managed a successful author and writer group on Long Island for five years. During events with publishers and authors I learned what matters, what agents are looking for, and the benefits and pitfalls of traditional publishing vs. self-publishing.

I've gained a lot of tips and tidings on my writing journey and want to share what I know.

Besides my passion for writing, I'm a fitness enthusiast, and I love coffee, chocolate, and animals. I'm mom to two amazing young men, and I live on Long Island with my husband, four zany cats, and the sweetest dog ever.

Whether you're new to writing, ready to query, or about to submit your manuscript,  welcome, you've come to the right place.
